Over 1000 volunteers for the 3/29 Clean Up Day!

“What an amazing day!” was the sentiment of all 1000+ participants for the March Compton Clean up Day.  Seven homes around Citizen’s of Zion Missionary Baptist Church were painted, cleaned and or landscaped, as well as multiple buildings of the church were painted.  Across the street, at Whaley Middle School at least 400 volunteers painted nine of the schools buildings and the massive fence that surrounds the school.  The tennis courts were also cleaned up, walkways swept, weeds pulled, etc.  The principle of Whaley, Dr. Eric Todd was beaming as he personally thanked practically every volunteer.

Several homes on Burris were worked on as well as several more in the neighborhood surrounding Faith Inspirational Church near Wilson Park.

Councilwoman Lillie Dobson, CUSD Board Member Emma Sharif and Pastor B.T. Newman of Citizen’s of Zion also thanked the participants at the end-of-the day luncheon.

Participants came as far away San Jose State University, Saddleback Church in South Orange County as well as 7 local Compton churches, the church of Paramount and multiple local organizations like the Young Marines, Compton United Soccer Club, and Whaley Middle School students and teachers.

This event has happened five times a year since 2006 and has grown from 150 participants to this month’s showing of over 1000!

Please join us on the next clean up day, June 28, 2008.
